What Is Chuanshu?

Chuanshu (穿书, chuānshū) is a Chinese web-fiction term for stories in which someone from our world wakes up inside a novel, usually in the body of one of its characters. In Have No Fear, Shijie’s Here!, a doctor, Lan Qinghe, wakes up inside a cultivation novel as the villainess who shares her name.

What Makes a Story Chuanshu

Chuanshu is one kind of chuanyue, the Chinese word for crossing into another time or world. What sets it apart is where the crossing lands: in a story someone already wrote. Pick a numbered phrase to see it happen in Have No Fear, Shijie’s Here!.

A story in which someone from our world wakes up inside a novel¹, in the body of one of its characters², with the plot already written around them³, and often with a system giving orders⁴.

What is transmigration in Chinese novels?

Transmigration, 穿越 (chuānyuè), is the Chinese fiction trope of a modern person waking up in another time, world or body. It spread through 1990s popular novels such as Huang Yi’s Xun Qin ji and Xi Juan’s Love That Crosses Time, then moved online, where women writers made it one of web romance’s favorite plots (Feng 2013, p. 19).

Many land in a past dynasty, or in a cultivation world of sects and immortals, the setting of Xianxia Yuri to Read in English.

Chuanshu is the branch that lands inside a book. In Have No Fear, Shijie’s Here! the book is a cultivation novel, so Lan Qinghe gets both at once.

What is the difference between transmigration and reincarnation?

Transmigration moves a grown person, memories intact, into another body or world. Reincarnation, 转世 (zhuǎnshì), starts a new life from birth. Rebirth, 重生 (chóngshēng), sends a character back to an earlier point in her own life; Yin and Sun (2023) trace how it grew in Chinese fantasy web novels.

By the early 2010s rebirth had joined the four most popular time-travel plots of Chinese web romance (Feng 2013, p. 36). Villainess Yuri to Read in English shows how villainess stories use them. Lan Qinghe in Have No Fear, Shijie’s Here! is transmigration, not rebirth: she dies in our world and wakes up as someone else, already grown.

Why is the transmigrator so often the villainess?

Because the villainess has the most to lose. She is written to fail, so knowing the book is her only way out, and many chuanshu stories open with someone waking up as her.

What is a system in transmigration novels?

A system, 系统 (xìtǒng), is a voice or screen that hands the transmigrator tasks and rewards. It drives Mo Xiang Tong Xiu’s danmei novel The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System, published in English by Seven Seas.

In Have No Fear, Shijie’s Here! the system is Bai Ling, a talking orb that repaired Lan Qinghe’s body and promised to send her home a billionaire.

What is quick transmigration?

Quick transmigration, 快穿 (kuàichuān), sends a character through one world after another, finishing a task in each, often one handed out by a system, before moving on. Wang (2021, p. 41) names Vivibear’s Journey in Search of Previous Incarnations (2007) as the first she knows of, and finds a forerunner in the late-Ming Tower of Myriad Mirrors.
