A baihe novel is a Chinese novel about love between women, and many first appear as web serials on Jinjiang Literature City. Scholars read the genre closely too: Ni (2024) studies a baihe novel that turns into a tomb-raiding adventure. What Does Baihe Mean? explains the word itself.

A Chinese yuri novel and a baihe novel are the same thing under two names: yuri is the Japanese word, GL the English shorthand, baihe the Chinese. Chinese Yuri in English covers the whole genre, comics and audio as well as novels.
Taiwan Travelogue by Yáng Shuāng-zǐ, translated by Lin King, won the International Booker Prize in May 2026, the first book translated from Mandarin to win it (the Booker Prizes). It follows two women on a food tour of 1930s Taiwan.
Four baihe novels are in print in English: Graywolf publishes Taiwan Travelogue, Rosmei At the World’s Mercy and The Creator’s Grace, and Seven Seas The Beauty’s Blade, with three more announced for 2027. Three of the eight novels on this page are historical. The Clouds of Past Millennia opens with an emperor who died in 968; At the World’s Mercy is set in the court of Great Yu, where power has only recently passed to women; The Beauty’s Blade follows the heir of a martial sect and the leader of a demonic one.
