Shijie (师姐, shījiě) means “senior sister”: a woman who became a disciple of the same teacher or sect before you did. It is a rank among fellow disciples, not a blood tie: in sect stories, whoever joined first is senior. In Have No Fear, Shijie’s Here!, Lan Qinghe calls Ji Linxue Shijie, and younger disciples call her Lan-shijie.
师姐
One title, three ways to say it
A level tone, then a dipping one: shee-jyeh. 师 is teacher and 姐 is elder sister, so a sister through the same teacher.
The usual rendering in xianxia and wuxia translations. Older ones write Senior Martial Sister.
Add the surname to tell two seniors apart: the younger disciples greet “Ji-shijie, Lan-shijie” in one breath.
Shijie and her shimei
A sect borrows the family’s words. Your teacher’s other students become your older and younger sisters and brothers, and in sect stories, what decides which is who joined first. Pick a title to see who it names.

Lan Qinghe dies and wakes up inside a cultivation novel as its villainess, a disciple of the Xuanqing Sect. The heroine she is told to protect, Ji Linxue, is her shijie. To the sect’s newer disciples, both of them are.

A shijie is not a blood sister. 姐 (jiě) is elder sister, and a real one is 姐姐, jiějie; shijie adds 师 (shī), teacher, so she is a sister only through the same teacher.
In Chapter 9 of Have No Fear, Shijie’s Here!, the village boy they rescue says “Thank you, Jiejie,” the everyday word for a young woman, while the peak’s younger disciples call the same two women Ji-shijie and Lan-shijie.

A senior disciple is someone who became a disciple of your teacher or sect before you did. Chinese splits it by gender: a senior disciple who is a woman is your shijie, a man your shixiong. Dictionaries also use shijie for an older fellow student, but in sect stories, joining first is what counts.

Wei Wuxian calls Jiang Yanli shijie because she belonged to the Jiang sect before he joined it. In Mo Xiang Tong Xiu’s Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Mo Dao Zu Shi), she is the sect leader’s daughter and he is taken in as a disciple, so she is his sister by the sect rather than by birth.
Have No Fear, Shijie’s Here! puts the same title between two women, in a GL story where the shijie is the heroine.
